In order to build our mini golf courses we had to find out the measurements for the course. It wasn't too difficult to make the measurements for our course but it was time consuming to make the exact cuts for our base board if the course. It took a lot of trial and error to make our wood cuts because we could not leave a gap in the course. All in all the building process took a lot of time out of other aspects in this project like the multimedia section, but it was a presentable course. I look forward to future classes doing this project for hands on work, fun and experience with power tools.
Obstacles
The obstacles for our course were the most fragile part of our course because it was made from scratch. My obstacle, the airplane wings, represent one of the struggles the Wright Brothers faced in creating the airplane. The difficulty of getting the golf ball between the gap represents the difficulty the brothers faced in making the wings of the plane. Other obstacles on the course also represent many important inventions from the Industrial Revolution. One example is the Maxim Gun. The Maxim Gun is the very first automated machine gun created by Harim Maxim in 1885. This invention was used for the spread of Imperialism from Europe to Africa. Our golf course was one of the most difficult courses because of our obstacles and I am very proud of that.
Humanities
The Humanities section of the project required an essay which would be put on the informational stand. The stand was created by the art and marketing group and was very well made. My essay was about the Wright Brothers, the inventors of the airplane. I had to write about how their achievement of human-powered flight was made possible not only with their creativity, but their struggles as well. The requirements for the essay was to pick an important event from history and write about what happened during the event. My group's topic was the Industrial Revolution. It was an enjoyable learning experience and I look forward to improving my essay work.
Math
The Mathematical side of our 10th grade project was the creation of the courses and the proof of getting a hole in one or as few shots possible. Because I enjoy math it was not a hard task. I helped in creating the course and I created my path of least resistance. It was showcased for our course and displayed for exhibition.
Multimedia
The Multimedia side of the project was very fun. There were four groups: The Math Group, The Humanities Group, The Art and Marketing Group and The Video Group. I was in The Video Group and we had to create a video for each hole within a time frame. We really depended on other groups to finish their scripts for the video for the holes and because it was done so late the videos did not turn out as great as we wanted to. Granted they were still made but it was not "star quality". Other than the course videos, I also helped in filming the documentary for the project as a whole. It was a very fun and exciting part of the project because I acted for the hole videos, learned how to use a green screen, learned and helped how to make the videos for the project.
Exhibition
For the HTHI Golf project we displayed all our courses in the 10th grade classes and commons. My group and I had shifts on when to be at our course to exhibit. I was dressed as Chris Putter, the newscaster of the golf holes. For the exhibit friends and family all came to see the project. It was a very fun and informational exhibition because we had to explain what our course is about and what each obstacle represented. I felt very confident about exhibiting our golf course to parents and it has prepared me for real world situations. I have learned to become a better speaker through this project and am very glad to participate in the High Tech High International Golf Project.
